For those who may not know, here is a little bit about Anne Taintor from her website:

Anne graduated from Harvard in 1977 with a degree in Visual and Environmental
Studies. After college, she focused on collage, and her work always incorporated
a subtle humor and playfulness. For years, Anne’s art was more of a sideline
than a full-time occupation. But in 1985, she was a single mother searching for
a way to spend more time at home with her daughter than her job in cartography
permitted, and she began to develop a line of collaged pins and magnets. The new
collages combined vintage images with Anne’s own interpretation of what these
men and women might really be thinking. They were instantly a hit with Anne’s
customers, though it took a little longer for her to be brave enough to “quit

A sweet lady just called with a wonderful story about the "What You Eat Standing Up Doesn't Count" napkins. She told me that her niece just bought some of the napkins for her as a gift. When she received them she was so excited. Why, you might ask? Because she is THE Beth Barnes who originally said "What You Eat Standing Up Doesn't Count".

Beth went on to say that about 25 years ago she threw a wonderful large party at her home. She looked around the room and no one was eating all her wonderful food that she worked so hard to prepare. So she announced to the crowd, "Everyone, What You Eat Standing up Doesn't Count! So eat!" She was trying her best to encourage everyone to eat. She said that she just thought of it off the cuff. How clever she is!

It turns out that one of the guests at the party was a woman who had a daughter who wrote anthologies. The daughter wrote an anthology on food and Beth's comment was included in the book. Luckily she was given credit for her clever line. And since that book came out, Beth's clever words have been on cards and other items. She was so excited that her words were also included on cocktail napkins.

I was so excited to hear the story. Beth Barnes made my day.
She went on to say, "It's my only claim to fame".
To which I replied, "I think that is a pretty big claim to fame!"

Thanks Beth for sharing that story. I enjoyed it very much.

Got this from Ms. Oprah. However, I have a few twists on the original.

1 1/2 C POM juice

4 shots (1 oz) Absolut Citron Vodka

2 Shots (1 oz) Cointreau

Juice from 1/2 Lime

Garnish with a lime twist or wedge.

Put it all in a cocktail shaker (except the garnish). Add Ice...shake, shake, shake, shake your booty!

A Funny Thing Happened on Sunday Morning

UPDATE: "Man On Wire" won the Academy Award for best Documentary. Oh My....

So, here I am on Sunday Morning, barely awake and watching one of my favorite TV shows, CBS Sunday Morning, when what before my bleary eyes would appear; a segment on Philippe Petit. He is a performer from France who is famous for many things, most notably a tightrope walk between the New York Trade Center Towers.

While in the first of the introduction to the piece, I screamed, "That is the picture I have!"

I purchased 5 slides on Ebay of a tightrope walker. I never knew where they were taken or who the pictures captured. Well today, I found out; Philippe Petit.

The only reason that within seconds I knew I owned the slides is because I spent hours working on them. I used one of them for a promotional postcard that I created, but have not published yet. To tell the truth, I didn't even remember what was printed on the reverse side "The Associated Press AP PHOTOCOLOR".

These slides are in horrible condition. They are entirely pink from years of improper storage. My guess is that someone, the photographer, an ex-employee of AP, a family member, either didn't know what they had, or didn't care.

I bought them for the subject matter. I new that I could fix them up and use them in my work. And I did...it took hours, but I painstakingly cleaned one of them on the computer and colorized them.

Now I have to find the receipt and start researching just exactly what I have. This should be fun.

The image that starts the video (the screen capture) is the exact image. I now need to know who the photographer is.

I'm glad to know the story behind this image. I'm glad to know that I have images of the Twin Towers. I spend so much time with images magnified to the point of pixelation, just to get them looking as perfect as possible, perfection that I see in my head. Many times I get caught in "the trees". I have to back up to see the forest. The curve of the building's facade, the color of Philippe's hair....and why was that scaffolding in the picture just a few floors down from the wire? I now have some answers.

And now the documentary of the famous walk is up for an Oscar® tonight.

Off to do research.

Probably shouldn't post this, but here it is:

I really must see the movie now. So many questions come up...how did he set up this wire "in secret"? While concentrating on the details, I can see side wires that are anchored to something. They come off the side of the wire...but to what is the main wire tethered? He spent 45 minutes up there and had more than one photographer...the pictures I own are from the angle you see at the beginning of the video. But after researching, I've seen other photographs from at least one other photographer.

Clearly I didn't know what I had. Clearly I've made it look better than it did. Clearly I've changed it more than 20%. But I don't know that I'm brave enough to publish this card now. I don't really know what my rights are as owner of the actual slides. Anyone know? Many times the original photographer retains all rights, but if I have the original work, the very essence of that image what really do I have. They could be copies, obviously. Because as you can see in the video, someone, has the identical shot at the identical angle. It is just in black and white. Do I try to sell the slides? Do I donate them to Phillipe? Is the Associated Press going to come drag my ass out of bed and flog me like they are trying to do to Shepard Fairey?

I wasn't trying to sell the image...I was just using it as a promotional piece. But as a photographer myself, I'm confused as to what I have. Ken thinks it is "worth money"...but I'm afraid that I'm opening a can of worms here with AP that I really don't need. I know the law is that technically it is copy written when it is created....but we all know the practicality of that statement. I want to do the right thing here, but I don't want to leave the things stuck in my art bin forever.

1.) What is a Frozen Drink Machine?

A Frozen Drink Machine (Margarita Machine) is piece of equipment that has a variety of uses. First and foremost, it acts as a "mini freezer". Basically, you put frozen drink mix product in the machine, turn it on to the "freeze mode" and the frozen drink product comes out in with a slush consistency (after the proper amount of time). That is, of course, if you used the right kind of frozen drink mix that contains the proper amount of sugar (measured in brix units). Frozen beverage equipment has 3 main components. A condenser, an evaporator and a compressor. All three have their specific functions, however, they combine their functions to remove heat from the frozen drink mix product which produces a slush product which make frozen drinks.

2.) Is a Margarita Machine a commercial blender with legs?
No, a margarita machine is not a blender (with or without legs). You can't place chunks of ice, fruit or anything else of this type in the machine without it breaking the auger (the device that churns or twirls the slush product). The idea of the frozen beverage machine is to churn the smoothie or cocktail mix over the evaporator (cooling drum) so that it speeds the freezing process.

3.) Does the frozen drink machine require ice to operate?

No, you don't need ice to operate a frozen drink machine. As a matter of fact, you DON'T WANT TO USE ICE IN MARGARITA MACHINES, GRANITA MACHINES, SMOOTHIE MACHINES, SLUSH MACHINES OR ANY OTHER FROZEN BEVERAGE MACHINES! Save the ice for your home or commercial blender. You want a margarita machine to take you away from standing at a blender while everyone else has a good time. You want the frozen drink machine to let you join the party.

4.) Is a Frozen Drink Machine the same as a Margarita Machine, Slush Machine, Daiquiri Machine, Smoothie Machine or a Granita Machine?
A Margarita Machine is known by many names. Most of the time it depends on where you are from and how the frozen drink machine or restaurant supply companies like to advertise them. We've heard the terms, frozen beverage machine, frozen beverage dispenser, frozen juice machine or frozen juice dispenser from our friends in the North United States (Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and other Northern Customers). Funny Family Cocktail Story..

Legend has it that our Grandparents on our Mother's side loved to drink and entertain their friends and family. They were "partiers" before the word "party" was a verb.

Our people come from a small town in Texas named Mart. Not far from Waco and Austin this little community was quite the agricultural town. Farmers and Ranchers (part-time and full-time) like to have a good time.

Well, once upon a time, our mother heard singing out on the farm. Not the normal "whistle while you work" singing that can be heard from the kitchen. No, this was the top of your lungs, off key singing that only rings true from the great outdoors in the summer air. She was a teenager at the time so curiosity got the better of her.

Mom strolled outside to find the mysterious melody. She looked everywhere around the house and found nothing. The singing seemed to go away by the time she reached the driveway. So she turned to head back to the house. But wait....there it is again. She turned on her heals and headed for the back of the house. But she still didn't see what her ears were hearing.

As she got closer to the back field, she noticed the large tree that normally provided the small amount of shade for a good part of the lot. She knew she must be getting closer, because the singing got louder. But there wasn't a soul near the tree, let alone anyone, or anything that could sing.

Finally she arrived at the big tree. Standing under the tree's canopy, she heard the singing again. She looked up into the tree to find her mother and her mother's sister sitting up in the tree singing their lungs out. What could cause two full grown women to climb a tree and entertain themselves in this way?

Vacuvin Wine Vacuum..

These Wine Bottle Vacuums are great. One of our new favorite items.

We read recently in a consumer magazine that they didn't rate well. The article went on to say that the Vacuvin Wine Vacuum doesn't work any better than the cork that the bottle came with. We totally disagree! We have had many a good bottle of wine become bitter and acidic after sitting in the fridge with the cork re-inserted for just 1 day. Air is the culprit.

Here is how they work:

The Wine Saver is a vacuum pump, which extracts the air from the opened bottle and re-seals it with a re-usable rubber stopper. Place the re-usable stopper in the bottle and extract the air from the bottle using the Wine Saver pump. A “click” sound tells you when you have reached the optimum vacuum level. The vacuum slows down the oxidation process so that you can enjoy your wine for longer.

Whether you love red or white...like it cold or room temperature, we have had EXCELLENT luck with this easy to use vacuum system. And we don't currently sell them! We will soon carry them, because they are a must have for wine lovers who don't drink the whole bottle at one sitting...yes, there are a few of us out there.

Resolutions...we wish we could keep them. We would be so happy if we could just do a little bookkeeping and filing everyday so that it wouldn't pile up. We get busy and the next thing you know the books haven't been balanced since August. And look at the pile of papers in the corner! As one mother used to say, "Saints preserve us"!

OK..all those over organized people out there, we bow to your greatness. Just like Housekeeping, Bookkeeping and God Forsaken FILING tend to pile up QUICKLY!!

We remember Linda Ellerbee saying once that her mother used to always tell her to do a little housekeeping everyday so that she would always have a clean house. Of course we are paraphrasing here...but ain't it the truth!

So, on to more filing. We believe if we have one more heavy sigh we will hyperventilate!

The Bookkeepers..

It is the end of the year. To most people that means a fresh start...yada, yada, yada..to us, it means Accounting, Inventory and Bookkeeping!!

There has to be a song, poem or SOMETHING written for the bookkeepers of the world. They deserve every penny and more. I am on my knees praying to the Accounting Gods to save me from this jungle of numbers.

Hence my prayer....

May the God of your Choice Bless all bookkeepers. Of course, a special Thank You is saved for the GOOD bookkeepers...you know who you are. Bookkeepers are worth their weight in gold...if only we had their weight in gold. We would be more than happy to share.

Low Sugar Cocktails & Slushes

We don't profess to be an expert in all things "Low Sugar", but since we are trying to reduce our sugar intake, we have been giving some thought to cocktails made with real 100% juice. Don't get us wrong, we have some wonderful cocktail mixes. But we also have some wonderful 100% juice mixes that are great as cocktail mixers. We have 100% juice ChillyFruit® flavors like Orange Mango, Green Watermelon, Blue Raspberry, Strawberry, Fruit Punch, Peach Mango, Cherry Limeade. Any of these mixes would work well with or without liquor. These mixes can be frozen using a blender or a frozen drink machine and contain no artificial sweeteners. They contain more than 100% of the RDA for Vitamin C...a healthy dose of vitamins to go with your cocktail. You Health-Nut You!

Some Recipes:

100% juice Orange Mango and Peach Mango are great with Vodka, Rum, Coconut Rum or Tequila.

Oprah's Pomegranate Martini

We don't get the chance to watch Oprah very often, but every now and then we find a recipe or two that just sounds yummy. Oprah's Pomegranate Martini was one of them.

Here is the printed version from Oprah.com:

INGREDIENTS:
1 1/2 cups pomegranate juice
2 oz. Absolute Citron vodka OR white tequila
1 oz. Cointreau liquor
Cup of ice
Optional: Splash of sparkling water
Optional: Squeeze of lemon Shake ingredients in a shaker and put in chilled martini glasses. Put pomegranate fruit into glass as garnish.

Oprah's version from the show (from her voice, to your lips):

INGREDIENTS:

1 1/2 Cups Pomegranate Juice

4 shots (oz) Absolut Citron Vodka

2 shots (oz) Cointreau

Squeeze of Lime (or Lemon..but O prefers Lime)

Garnish with a lime twist or wedge.

We haven't tried it yet but it sounds yummy!

So, this evening we had a lovely salad and a nice glass of wine (or two...but who is counting) for dinner. Why in the world would we bring this up in a blog. Well, this nice dinner got us thinking...hmm. You know, wine just tastes better in a fun, comfortable wine glass. Not just any glass, one that makes you smile. Yes we can be a little...strange, but who cares. Do you know how a nice pen feels in your hand? The weight, the smooth feel, the stroke of the ink? Well, a wine glass can be just as important to the senses. I'll bet you never gave it a minute of thought. Most people wouldn't...but hey, like we stated above...we can be a little strange.

So, here are our picks for great wine glasses:.....ahh....who cares. We've had wine! Nighty, night!

Flasks...transport your fun!

Flasks...we remember a time when our relatives travelled with a liquor briefcase. Does anyone out there remember those? Metal cases lined in velvet or satin with pre-formed foam that cradled a couple of glasses, a jigger or two, a bottle of your favorite spirit and other tools that made the perfect cocktail. Many were engraved with the owner's initials. We can remember that two of our uncles never left home without their "medicine case".

We aren't sure why these cases came to mind...reminiscing and digressing we guess. We don't carry these cases, but we do have some really cool, groovy, retro and even funny hip flasks. Some of the flasks have hooks right on the sides so that you can attach your keys or attach the flask to your pants.

We have a customer who bought a few to give to her friends. These friends actually have a float in the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans. Now that is a great idea! They can hang them from their costumes and never be without something tasty to quench their thirsts.

Now...when you need to make a friend smile, you have to look at these flasks from Olive Sandwiches... They are hip, chic, funny and oh, so retro. We should say that they are the "hippest" hip flasks we have found (pardon the pun). There are several styles from which to choose...

Of course, we also carry Jack Daniel's flasks for the guys and girls in your life who often feel the need to "Get All Jacked Up"...quoting Gretchen Wilson. Check out the whole line.

Flasks...they are making a comeback. And you don't have to carry liquor only in them...why not some refreshing water? Yeah...we know. But the thought is good.
